The Penrose Scroll - Edition 1

Welcome to the inaugural Penrose Health newsletter – The Penrose Scroll. Here you will find general updates that relate to our community… new tools, Penrose Portal and training updates, and a platform for getting to know and celebrate your colleagues.

Latest News

Penrose POST v2 has arrived!

What is it? – the new, more sophisticated version of Penrose POST.

It can include more data inputs like patients’ age, gender, pre-existing conditions and multiple choice selections for symptoms, to name a few parameters.

It can link different processes together. For example - if a patient calls about an injury but also wants to discuss the medication they’ve been prescribed for their pain management, our call handlers can move seamlessly from the Injuries POSTcard to the Medication POSTcard.

It also has useful links to Portal pages and the NHS website.

Who has it? – It’s currently being used by our Call Handlers at London Bridge for LMC and Penrose & MW calls.

Why? – it allows our call handlers to triage patients with far more nuance and accuracy than ever before!

We can also now see the most common concerns patients are calling for and the most common appointments we are booking, which can be used to make informed decisions regarding capacity.

Our London Bridge Call Handlers are loving using POST v2, and we look forward to telling you what’s coming next!

Need to book a desk at London Bridge?

If you need to work at our London Bridge site, it’s wise to pre-book a desk. It can get very busy and you wouldn’t want to turn up on the day to find that the only seat available is a bean bag!

To book, see our Portal page: Desk Booking at London Bridge

Discontinuation of ear irrigation

For a variety of reasons, our GP surgeries are no longer performing ear irrigation services.  Patients can be referred to a Community ENT clinic or go to a private provider.

What’s new in the Penrose Portal?

Portal people prolifically produce in previous period!

Last year, the L&R Team were busy creating 88 new pages and updating more than 30 in the Penrose Portal.  They hope staff are finding the information contained in them useful, but are always happy to hear feedback!  And if there is a topic that should be included but isn’t there yet, let them know through the feedback link – where? – On the Portal Homepage, of course!

Beyond First Impressions

In getting to know our team, we’ve discovered that…

While new to us, he’s not so new to Bake Off!

David Atherton

Our most recent nursing hire, David Atherton, arrived at Kingfisher in September last year… but some of you may recognise him as the winner of Season 10 of The Great British Bake Off.  We were keen to get to know him a bit better…

What's inspiring you in life right now?

All the teachings of Brene Brown!

Sweet or savoury?

I’d miss savoury the most if I had to give one up, but I do like both, for example at the cinema I’m a sweet & salty kind of popcorn guy. I would always choose a pizza over a slice of cake though.

What’s your favourite board game?

I’m really not a board game person since I was scarred being forced to play with lots of competitive siblings growing up. Is it too early to mention Pandemic? I played that recently and quite enjoyed it despite the recent past.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Oh I have so many. Probably curling up on the sofa with a book to read when I know I have lots of unread e-mails to attend to, but also good croissants, garden centres, true crime podcasts.

Where would we find you this weekend?

Out on a walk in the countryside with my husband and dog. I love getting out, away from technology and just walking.

What’s your favourite underground line and why?

If the Windrush line counts I’d definitely go with that, I don’t love being underground, but I have a soft spot for Lizzie and Vicky too.

What’s one thing you had to learn the hard way?

Italian meringue buttercream. If you’ve never tried it, protect your arms from the molten syrup.

If you were not a nurse, what would you be doing?

I’m actually doing it. I also write kids cookbooks and I love doing it. It seems strange but they complement each other perfectly. But I am a nurse to my core so could never leave it totally.

We’re so glad to hear that, David.  Welcome to Penrose Health and thanks for telling us your guilty pleasure!

In the next issue… a Call Handler gets the treatment!

The Shout Out 📢

A special shout out to Helen Coates for wrangling Adobe InDesign to create our fab newsletter header and graphics, and to Frances Woisin for her writing and interview prowess. THANKS guys – you’re the best!

We think all of our employees are invaluable, but if you think a member of your team deserves a shout-out for something special they’ve done or achieved, let Frances Woisin or Kelda Manser-Smith know on Teams.

We’re recruiting…

If you know someone who would be a good fit for the team, please refer them to us… for a potential £200 bonus if your referral is hired!

See our Portal page for details about the Referral Program kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk 👈️

And finally, did you know that...

  • Farmer J’s at London Bridge offers a 10% discount to NHS staff.

  • Ideal Coffee (Greenwich Market) offers a whopping 50% discount off their coffee to all NHS staff!

If you know of any discounts local to your surgery, let us know so we can post it here!
